Introduction 

An association is a collection of individuals who have come together for one or a small number of reasons.

First, a group of people must exist; second, these individuals must be organized; and third, they must share a defined goal in order for an association to be formed.

A family, church, trade union, music club, etc. are a few examples.

Definition 

William James (1890):
“Association is the process by which mental connections are formed between ideas, sensations, or memories, often based on their similarity, contrast, or contiguity.”

Characteristics

  1. It consists of a group of individuals

  2. The people organize themselves.

  3. These individuals engage in certain behaviors in order to achieve particular objectives.

Fundamental components

  1. Men form associations in order to achieve a goal or cause:- Similar to a community, it does not develop organically.

  2. It determines its aim: -It is a form with a predetermined purpose or aim. It has a purpose in mind. It cannot  maintain its identity without any distinct aim and object.

  3. It is an actual type of organization

  4. Only rules and regulations are followed by members: -All associations are formed with certain rules and regulations.

  5. It is voluntary to join: -An organization’s membership is entirely voluntary.
