Education is simply one of the aspects of socialization. It includes the acquisition of the knowledge and the learning skills. It plays a very important role in the socialization of children in the society. Education helps children to represent themselves in the society.  In every school, the format is designed in this way that help children be productive members of the society.  Education is a process of every society that prepares very young people for a place in adult life and also teaches them the values of the society. In largest sense education has a formative effect on the mind, character and physical ability of an individual. It is a process by which society can deliberately transfer its knowledge , skills and values from one generation to another.  So, the word education is derived from the Latin  word Educare  which means to ” bring up”.

Aims of  Educational institution

  1. Education aim is to develop the personality of the individual

  2.  It aims to integrate the individuals with the society

  3. It aims to maintain the society 

  4. It aims to perpetuate culture in the individuals

  5. It aims to increase the efficiency of the individual

Function of Educational Institutions

It is an important agent of socialization which helps in encouraging social integration , especially in the countries which has a diverse population like United States. Through schools children’s interact with other children with different cultural background and come into contact with the one culture that is followed by very individual.

Kinds of Educational Institutions

there are three types of educational institution . They are as follows: –

  1. Formal Education

  2. Informal Education

  3. Non – Formal Education

From here we begin with the information of types of educational institutions

Formal Education

Formal education  usually happens inside the premises of  the school where a individual learn the basics, academic and it also helps in developing trade skills. The small children start there schooling from Nursery or Kindergarten but the formal education begins from the  elementary school to secondary schools.

E.g. learning in schools , attending school grading and certification also attending college or university degree.

Characteristics of Formal education

  1. Formal Education is structured  hierarchically.

  2. Formal education are planned and deliberate.

  3.  In formal education scheduled fees are paid regularly

  4. Formal education has a chronological grading system.

  5. Formal education has some subjects and are syllabus oriented.

  6. In formal education syllabus should be covered in a specific period of time

Advantage of Formal Education

  1. Formal education has an organized educational model.

  2. Formal education has up to date course contents

  3. In formal education students acquire knowledge from well trained and professional teacher

  4. Formal education consists of  learning process which is structured and systematic.

  5. In formal education final assessments are given to ensure the advancement of the student for the next learning phrase

  7. Certificates formally recognize formal education.

  8. Formal education helps  in easy access of jobs

Disadvantage of Formal  education

  1. The academic session’s expiry bored the brilliant students in formal education, promoting them to the next stage.

  2. In formal education there is a chance  of adoption of bad habits which may alarming due the presence of the good and bad students in the classroom.

  3. In formal education there is a wastage of time as some lazy students are not able to cover properly  in spite of motivations by the professional students

  4. In formal education sometimes there  are some unprofessional and non- standard education system which causes wastage of time and money of students .

  5. Formal education is costly and rigid as compared to the other forms of education.

Informal education

Informal education may consists of parent teaching his child how to prepare meal or how to ride a bicycle. It is when you are not studying in a school and do not use any form of learning method. In informal education, there is no pre-planning or deliberateness. 

E.g. Teaching children some basics such as numeric characters, Sometime an individual learning  his/ her mother tongue.

Characteristics of Informal education

  1. Informal education is independent of boundary walls

  2. Informal education does not have any definite syllabus 

  3. Informal education are not pre- planned

  4. Informal education does not have any timetable

  5. In informal education, students do not pay fees.

  6. One attends informal education through daily experience.

  7. Informal education is a lifelong process which is a natural way

  8. In informal education, one does not require certificates and degrees.

Advantage of Informal education

  1.  Informal education does not have any time span

  2. It is less costly 

  3. It is time efficient learning process

  4. In informal education there is no need to hire experts.

  5. Learners can pick information from T.V. , radio , phone or by doing conversation with there friends or the family members.

  6. It utilizes a variety of techniques

  7.  It involves activities like personal research on there topic of interests.

Disadvantage  of Informal Education

  1. In informal education information acquired by the internet may lead to disinformation.

  2. In informal education utilized techniques may not be correct

  3. There is no any time span 

  4. There is no any proper schedule of learning

  5. It creates lack of confidence in the student

  6. There is a absence of discipline ,attitude an good habits in children in informal education.

Non- formal Education

A group of homogeneous individuals should organize consciously, deliberately, and systematically for implementation.

E.g. Some fitness programe, some community based adults programe etc.

Characteristics of Non – Formal education

  1. People plan for non-formal education to occur outside of school life.

  2. In a non-formal education setting, we can adjust the timetable.

  3. In non-formal education, we can adjust the syllabus.

  4. It does not have any  age limit

  5. fees and certificates are may or may not be necessary  in non formal education

  6. Non-formal education may be part -time or it may be fulltime.

  7. It consists of learning of professional skills

Advantage of Non – formal  Education

  1. It consists of practiced and vocational training

  2. Appreciated is the response to one’s skillful literacy growth.)

  3. It has flexibility in age, curriculum and time.

  4. It has open -ended educational system 

  5. There is no need to conduct regular exams

  6. IN non-formal education there is  no need of certificates and awards

Disadvantage of  Non -formal education

  1. It consists of attendance of participation which is unsteady

  2. Non formal education is just wastage of time for some period 

  3. There is no need to conduct exam in non formal education

  4. There is no need of professional trainers 

  5. There is no need of basic reading and writing  skills which crucial to learn

  6. in this education student may not enjoy full confidence as the regular students.
