An association is a group of people organized for a particular purpose or a limited number of purposes.
To constitute an association there must be firstly, a group of people; secondly, these people must be organized one; and thirdly they must have a common purpose of a specific nature to pursue.
Sometimes limited number of goals exist behind such organizations.
Examples: – Family, Church, Trade Union, Music club etc.

Men establish associations to fulfill some motive or cause. Like community it does not grow naturally. People make rules and regulations to operate a particular kind of association. Members of association run it according to these rules and regulations.

It determines its aim: -Associations form with a predetermined purpose or aim. Every association has a purpose in mind. No association can maintain its identity without any distinct aim and object.

It is a true form of organization: –An association is a true form of organization because it involves a group of people coming together with a specific aim.

Members only follow rules and regulations: –All associations form with certain rules and regulations. It also contains certain code of conducts. However, these rules and regulation as well as code of conducts are applicable to members only. It is obligatory for every member to follow these rules and regulations and co-operate with other members in the achievement of the goals of associations.

Membership is voluntary: –The membership of an organization is voluntary. A person becomes a member because he interests in it and like it and if he grows a feeling of dislike, he is absolutely free to withdraw his membership.

- Based on duration: – temporary or permanent such as flood relief and state respectively

Based on power: – Sovereign, semi – sovereign and non – sovereign such as state, university and club respectively.
